Official Nottinghamshire FA Sports Photographer: Carlton Town Vs. Basford United

Saturday Senior

BASFORD UNITED MADE IT FOUR NOTTINGHAMSHIRE SATURDAY SENIOR CUPS IN THE LAST FIVE SEASONS AS THEY BEAT CARLTON TOWN 3-0 AT THE ONE CALL STADIUM.

After an even first half, Basford ran out comfortable winners in the second half thanks to goals from James Reid, Nathan Watson and Zak Goodson.

Carlton started the brighter of the two sides and created some good opportunities early on. In the 18th minute Ben Hutchinson headed across to Aaron Opoku but the striker completely missed the ball from around eight yards out.

Basford grew into the contest and had a number of chances before half time, but were wasteful with their finishing. United top scorer Watson latched on to a cross from Courey Grantham at the back post but he failed to hit the target from a couple of yards out.

Despite the 32 team gap between the two sides in the England Football Pyramid, the Millers had a game plan and went almightily close to opening the scoring eight minutes from half time. Tyler Blake tried an audacious ‘overhead kick’ from a corner which crashed off the crossbar.

Basford came quickly out of the blocks at the start of the second half, and pressed to try and open the scoring. United were awarded a penalty in the 54th minute when Liam Bateman was bought down by Keiran Walker. Reid stepped up and composedly slotted the ball into the corner past Carlton ‘keeper Jack Steggles.

Bateman was heavily involved when Basford added a second goal just 10 minutes later. The right-back found himself in acres of space and crossed to Watson, who tapped home to double their advantage.

Carlton pressed to try and pull a goal back – created half chances but never really tested Kieran Preston in the Basford net.

Substitute Goodson made the game safe as he added a third a minute from normal time. The youngster latched onto a through ball from Matt Thornhill and slotted past Steggles.

Shortly after, the referee blew the full time whistle at the One Call Stadium as Basford sealed another Nottinghamshire Saturday Senior Cup.
